Raid Two - Research Proposal
Raid Three - Annotated Bibliography
Raid Four - Researched Argument
Chapter Overview
Now that you are acquainted with Composition, it is time to engage in a much larger adventure. As you progress through Chapter Two - "Master of Scribes," you will work on your ability as a player to engage in difficult discourse, fine tune your skills of argumentation, learn about the powers of research, and find your voice in a sustained chapter. This will not be easy, and each player will be pushed to discover new and interesting ideas related to their personal raids. Do not lose your momentum, players; the adventures have only just begun...
Raid Two - Research Proposal
This raid requires you to shift from a self-reflection of literacy and failure to broader cultural, social, or political issues and multiple modes of authoring. Before doing any research, you should provide justification for why you want to research the specific monster, villain, or concept that you have chosen. Write a detailed proposal that discusses your figure or concept, research plan, and purpose in depth for Chapter Two.
Raid Instructions
Decide on a topic for research. You want to choose a specific monster, villain, or concept that is complicated with multiple points of inquiry. This should be a project that you are passionate about. You want to narrow your focus as far as you can (i.e., don't choose psychopaths. Instead, you can choose Ramsay Bolton and how he represents that classification in his world). The topic should be researchable, meaning, you should be able to not only find the monster, villain, or concept in a text, but you should also be able to research their creation and impact on society and culture.
Your goal is to research the historical, cultural, and literary significance of the monsters/villains and their associated representations. Build questions of inquiry to further your search of the figure. Has their identity or representation shifted over time? Are there deep cultural ties? Was the monster/villain created or changed during a significant cultural/historical event?

- Raid must be a minimum of 300 words and "maximum" of 600 words.
- Include your figure at the top. This means that I would like to see what (con)text you are pulling this figure from. Give at least one picture. Will you be researching all iterations or just from a specific source?
- Give at least two references to your figure or concept. Strive for one source that shows the figure/concept and another that shows an analysis. (Include a works cited).
- Also include a statement about foreseeable problems.
- Make sure to include why this topic matters to you.
- Warrior - Increase proposal minimum from 300 to 500; maximum from 600 - 800.
- Bard - Write a 150 word personal narrative about your connection to the figure or concept.
- Ranger - Provide a total of two analyses and two videos that discuss your figure or concept. Write one to two sentences discussing why you chose those sources. (you can list the source in a cited format with hyperlink and put the statement underneath).
- Mage - Create up to a 60 second video explaining your interest in the topic.
Due: February 2nd
Raid Three: Annotated Bibliography
This Raid is the next step towards writing Raid Four's Research Guided Essay. You will be focussing on your research topic with the goal to find as many sources as you can that will further your understanding and provide new and interesting questions for your topic. You will be engaging in books, journal articles, videos, and pop culture articles from different viewpoints to shape your analysis.
Raid Instructions
After doing extensive research you must select a total of Six sources that you will use for the completed research guided essay (Raid Four). These sources should be critically read and vetted before selecting for the annotated bibliography. You may only have one source that is a primary source. Four of these articles must be peer-reviewed journal articles and/or from reliable academic sources. The other two can be popular culture sites such as news articles, wikis (not wikipedia), or content's website. Once all six have been acquired and read, please do the following for each article:

Raid Four: Research Guided Essay
Alright, so you have made it this far. Raid Four is all about taking your research and putting it into essay form. The word "essay" is a piece of writing on a particular subject, but a lesser known meaning is "to try or attempt." After reading through "Shitty First Drafts" and engaging with the habits of mind, you should be well acquainted with trying, failure, and success. No essay for class is perfect. Writing is never done; it is only due. I ask you to rise to the challenge of writing this essay--this try--and see where your writing takes you.
Raid Instructions
Write an argumentative essay on your monster or villain with the intent to inform a general audience on a historical, literary, and/or cultural front. You may choose to explain how monstrous your creature is, how misunderstood it is, or maybe how it is complicated in its alignment. Remember you are writing an argument to a general and diverse audience, so in order to be persuasive and effective it is necessary to support your claims with evidence from a variety of sources. Remember to incorporate possible objections to your argument (i.e., rebuttals to your claims) with the goal of giving an all encompassing view of your monster/villain. The goal is not to achieve consensus, but to put forth a well-reasoned and well-supported argument that helps your audience move toward understanding, rather than conflict.

Paper Approaches
There are many approaches to this project, but here are a few general suggestions:
- Historical overview - This would be a more traditional overview of the monster/villain. When did it first show up? What was the context in which it appeared? Was it influenced by anything in culture/society? How has it changed? What does it look like today?
- Cultural overview - When the monster/villain showed up, what was happening in that culture or the world? What is the cultural significance? Does it appear in other cultures? What type of influence does it have on society?
- Literary overview - In what literature does the monster/villain appear? What films, tv shows, comics, books, and/or games does it appear in? Does it change? What are the personality traits? Why is is so frequently used?
Research GuidelinesFour peer-reviewed sources: All players must use at least four scholarly, peer-reviewed sources on their topic. All sources should be from a published journal. Other academic sources can be in the form of books, but should be listed as a theoretical or literary criticism.
Six other sources: All players must use at least six sources that are popular media sources, videos, etc. You may use more peer-reviewed source, but some topics may be harder to research than others. Two Images: All players must cite and use two images that support their argument or counterargument. |

Alternate Assignments
**These Alternate Adventures alter the Raid and Specializations. All Alternate Adventures must be approved by the game master by March 9.**
Video in Adobe Premiere or After Effects
Make a Four Minute Video that makes the same argument in your essay. The video must include narration, images, text, and motion graphics. This shouldn't just summarize, but should enhance and further your argument. You may use the same arguments and quotations, but you should not read your entire paper. Let the images, videos, and text on the screen supplement your narration. Remember to have a full works cited. The video must be made in Adobe Premiere or After Effects.
Modifications to Raid
If this video is created, the player's specialization is no longer required (though will be rewarded if completed). Your new paper word minimum is 1500.
Weebly or Wix Website
Make a website dedicated to your paper. You must make the landing page that summarizes your paper and introduces the reader to your monster or villain (should be extensive). Then, there must be a separate page for each aspect of the monster/villain you are writing about. Make sure to use hyperlinks, videos, and images to provide as much information as you can about your topic. You may copy and paste information from your paper, but the site should be informative and flow. Your web pages should reference and call attention to your multimodal components.
Modifications to Raid
If this website is created, the player's specialization is no longer required (though will be rewarded if completed). This also changes the paper's word minimum to 1500.
You may propose another option and negotiate the parameters of the piece.
